About

A page about my adventures in reclaiming my computer, using free and open software and operating systems wherever possible and generally asking questions about what an old idiot like me can do with a computer these days.

In 2008, thanks to the residency at Banff, I was reminded of the fact that a computer is actually there to do my bidding, something I’d lost sight of. As soon as I opened Pure Data and started learning Python, I had a flashback to the experience of turning on my first computer, a Sinclair ZX81 and being confronted with that flashing ‘>’ awaiting my input. No pointer, no windows, no nothing a blank screen and freedom.

This blog started as a document of that process and has grown to accommodate wild flowers, walks, rants (of course) and archaeological sites.
